Characteristic dress worn by faculty, students, and graduates of colleges and universities. Also worn by those on whom honorary degrees have been conferred. Costumes vary with rank. Consists of long gown with long full sleeves, generally in black. There is some times a hood draped across the shoulders and a cape or mortatboard. Color if the hood denotes academic degree held by the wearer. Costumes alos worn on official occasions by lawyers, clergy...etc.
